Not the best book on this outstanding museum. There is too much about the institute and the buildings, and not enough about the art. The book published in the 1990s by the Hudson Hills Press is a much better description of the collection, although even that book should have more art. The Clark still needs the kind of comprehensive collection-focused book that it deserves.
Since I bought my copy at the museum, instead of before visiting, I didn't have the benefit of it beforehand. So for me this book is simply a great way to relive my visit. But I do wish I’d bought it before I went.The narrative follows the story of The Clark from its origins as a private collection to the major art institute it is today.What comes through here is the very attractive, multi-faceted personality of Sterling Clark. We follow his adventures as a battle-seasoned soldier, an explorer who traveled to remote regions of China, a sophisticate who lived in Paris and had a French wife, an accomplished breeder of thoroughbred race horses... We also follow his intensifying enthusiasm for collecting art – from his early passion for the Old Masters to his lifelong love affair with the French Impressionists to his later interest in the work of nineteenth century American artists like Homer and Sergeant.Clark had a generous spirit and wanted to give the public access to the museum he finally established. In his will, he did not entangle his collection in restrictions, as other famous collectors did. Knowing this about Sterling Clark makes his aesthetic legacy that much more admirable and appealing.There are numerous reproductions throughout of representative artwork and art objects from the collection. These show up to great advantage on the heavy, glossy paper used in this beautifully produced book. The analyses of the catalogued items are well written and full of fun details. For example, we learn that a young boy in a Constable portrait was a musical child prodigy and performed with the young Mozart.I did find the sections on the new architecture and The Clark's research and educational activities to be dry reading. Suddenly the text reads like mission-statement jargon. Perhaps art specialists will find it interesting, though.For the most part I read this book with great enjoyment. I recommend getting it if you're planning a visit to The Clark. And The Clark is certainly a must-see for art lovers.
